It's well known that Christmas can be one of the most difficult times of year for some people. A whole host of factors can contribute to feeling less than festive, while it seems the rest of the world is giddy and high on brightly lit decorations and retail mania.

For those who don't have family around, or are for any reason alone, Christmas is a stark reminder of that fact. If you, or someone you know, is struggling with loneliness, then here are some ways to cope that may come in useful.

Get involved with the community

Choirs and community based initiatives are a great opportunity to socialise and become involved with local events. Singing in a choir is a fantastic way to combine meeting new people with an activity that is known to boost wellbeing. Why not sign up for some Christmas carolling this year?

Volunteering for a good cause; such as a homeless kitchen, a local charity or an animal sanctuary allows you to connect with others which effectively combats feelings of loneliness. You will also experience a warm sense of satisfaction that you're actions are helping others less fortunate. Kindness is a tonic; the more you give out the more you get back.

Go away somewhere

Plan to get away and do something you enjoy, or visit somewhere you've always wanted to. A change of scenery can do wonders for your mood and to refresh tired out, negative emotions. Get out there and experience a corner of this beautiful planet that you've never seen before, or go back to a place that still holds a little piece of your heart.

Make use of technology

One of the greatest things about technological advancements is the way it connects people, bringing them closer together regardless of geographical distance. Video chats, which are free to use, enable you to have a face to face conversation with loved ones and to reach out to friends and family across the globe.

Plan ahead for the new year

It's sometimes worth reminding yourself that all feelings are impermanent, even loneliness. If you're feeling down about a situation right now, then turn your attention to future plans. It won't be long before we enter a fresh new year; start looking ahead and setting powerful intentions for the things you are going to do and goals you want to achieve.

Treat yourself to a gift

Sometimes a spot of retail therapy is just what you need to pick yourself up if you're feeling a bit low. Why not make use of the Black Friday sales and purchase a gift labeled; "To me, Love me".
