Nowadays, social media contributes to a large proportion of how we interact with each other. It has opened up a whole new world of engagement; which, on the one hand has created exciting opportunities, but on the other hand has given rise to the serious issue of cyberbullying.

Nearly three quarters of respondents, across the board in terms of their gender identity and sexual orientation, reported having been personally attacked or harassed online.

This is a worrying statistic, as the repercussions of online abuse can be devastating. It's not uncommon for young people to be driven to self harm, or even suicide, as a result of the torment experienced within an online setting.

With members of the LGBTQ+ community being so at risk and the internet being such a vast and often unregulated playing field for people to operate from behind a screen, it is impossible to attempt to stop all perpetrators of cyber abuse. What is possible, however, is to equip people with the necessary tools in order to protect and remove themselves from harmful situations.
