Aromatherapy Awareness Week: All You Need To Know.

The International Federation of Aromatherapists (IFA), hold an annual campaign that aims to bring awareness to the benefits of aromatherapy.

What is Aromatherapy?

In case, you're oblivious to this practice, aromatherapy is the use of plant extracts and essential oils to treat various health conditions. It can be utilised to bring peace and harmony to an individuals mind, body and soul. The oils can be used in lotions, creams, for massaging and purely for applying to your body, steam inhalation, in baths, diffusions and aromatic spritzers.

In support IFA's efforts to raise awareness about aromatherapy's benefits, here's a few health benefits of the practice that you need to know:

  • Aromatherapy massage can help to minimise the discomfort and pain of menstrual cramps, a study from the 2005 Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology indicates.

  • Massage with aromatherapy might also subdue the symptoms of menopause. In a study published in Menopause, researchers did a comparison between 30-minute aromatherapy massage (twice a week for four weeks) to massage with plain oil or no treatment at all and discovered that both massage and aromatherapy massage effectively reduced menopausal symptoms (with aromatherapy massage having greater effects than massage alone).

  • Aromatherapy massage, above ordinary massages have been discovered as being a valuable relaxation technique for eliminating stress and anxiety, and beneficial to immunity based on a study in 2002. In Japan using essential oils of lavender oil, sweet almond, cypress oil, sweet marjoram oil and tea tree oil.
